What DBS Checks Are Required For Volunteers?
The types of DBS check required for volunteers and other charity workers will depend on their duties and the level of risk involved.
Low-risk roles would include those where an individual does not work with money, doesn’t have access to the charity’s system and does not interact with the public. In these cases, it’s unlikely that an individual will need a DBS Check. However, the charity may have its own measures in place and may prefer to ask these individuals to obtain a Basic DBS Check.
Individuals who are involved with the aforementioned activities can be classified as high risk. In these cases, they should undergo a Basic or Standard DBS Check. This will highlight whether the people working for the charity organisation are trustworthy.
In addition to the above, some positions and roles will (legally) require an individual to obtain an Enhanced DBS Check. This applies to those working with children, the elderly or other vulnerable adults.

Should Charity Trustees Undergo A DBS Check?
There is no legal requirement for trustees to obtain a DBS Check. However, these individuals often wield significant influence as they tend to be in charge of donations and grants. Additionally, these individuals are likely to come into contact with the public and the vulnerable people the charity supports.
Due to this, it would seem inevitable that trustees should undergo a DBS Check. Again, the specific level of DBS Check they require will depend on their role as well as the nature of the charity.
Do volunteers need DBS checks?

Are DBS Certificates Transferrable?
When moving from one charity to another, whether or not a person can transfer the current DBS certificate depends entirely on the new role. Can a volunteer DBS be used for paid work?
