DBS Checks in Education
DBS Checks are a crucial safeguarding tool in education. While there are a number of industries and organisations that can request a DBS Check for potential employees, education is one of the sectors for which it is a legal requirement. This is to ensure the safety and well-being of children and young people.
If a person is to work in a nursery, school or college, they will require an Enhanced DBS Check, including a List 99 Check. This means that, whether they are an educator or a janitor within the school building, an Enhanced DBS Check must be carried out before they are hired for the role.

Enhanced DBS Checks For Schools
There are three DBS Checks available, including a Basic Check, a Standard Check, and an Enhanced Check. To be eligible for a position in which an applicant will have access to vulnerable groups, the applicant must first undergo an Enhanced Check. An Enhanced DBS Check includes the following:
- Convictions
- Cautions
- Warnings
- Reprimands
- Whether they are on the barred list for children and adults
- Local Police information regarding the applicant

Who needs a DBS Check in schools?
Because ensuring the safety of children and youths is crucial for any educational organisation, schools must adhere to a strict recruitment procedure. This is to prevent any applicant who is not suitable to work with children from accessing the property.
Therefore, everyone who will interact with students should go through an Enhanced DBS Check. This includes teachers, teaching assistants, supply teachers, volunteers and contractors.
What is a List 99 Check?
List 99 is the Children’s Barred List, and it includes all individuals who have been barred from working with children. A List 99 Check is included in all Enhanced Checks, but can also be requested separately if you need to fill a position at short notice, as it can often be completed on the same day as the request is made.
How do teachers get a DBS Check?
Your employer or licensing body should request the relevant checks on your behalf when you begin your first teaching or school placement. You cannot request an Enhanced Check yourself, as only Basic Checks are accessible for individuals. Once you have a certificate, your employer can periodically request that the record be updated by the DBS Update Service.
Can I use my DBS certificate when applying for another job?
DBS Checks are carried out to a role’s specific requirements. So while DBS Checks are normally not transferable, if the new job role matches your last and the regulatory body allows it, you may use it for your next application. However, it is good practice for schools to request a new or updated check, as DBS certificates are only as accurate as the day the certificate was issued.
How long does a DBS certificate last?
DBS Checks do not have an expiry date, but they are fixed and do not include any new information from the point at which they were requested. Therefore, it is highly recommended that schools update their checks every three years so that they are aware of any new offences.
