Basic DBS Check?
A Basic DBS Check, also referred to as a Basic Disclosure Check or CRB check, is a background check that looks into an individual’s criminal history to see if they have any unspent convictions, warning reprimands or cautions against their name.
A conviction is considered to be ‘spent’ after a certain period of time. After this, an individual’s criminal record will be updated, and the spent conviction will, more often than not, be removed. However, more serious crimes, like those involving children or other vulnerable members of society, will not be removed.
Who is eligible for a Basic DBS Check?
Anyone is able to apply for a Basic DBS Check. For example, if you are applying for a specific job, your potential employer may ask you to obtain a Basic DBS Check during the recruitment process. A Basic DBS Check is also required in order to apply for an alcohol licence and, in some cases, a visa.
In some cases, a Basic DBS Check will not be sufficient. For example, individuals applying for a job where they will be working with children, vulnerable adults or simply in a position of power will likely need to apply for a Standard or Enhanced DBS Check.

How to apply for a Basic DBS Check
Our application process is straightforward and easy to complete.

An organisation will need to register here and set up a company account within 15 minutes. The account users will then be sent the login details and the organisation’s reference.
Complete the application
The applicant will need to complete the Basic DBS Check online application form and provide the employer with the necessary identification documents.
Submit the application
The employer will now need to verify the identification documents supplied, approve the application and then submit it to us.
Wait for the results
Once we have received the application, we’ll oversee it, countersign and then send it to the DBS for processing. Once the process has been completed, the employer will receive a notification, and a hard copy Basic DBS certificate will follow at a later stage.

How long does a Basic DBS Check take?
Our DBS check application process is quick and straightforward. Generally, Basic DBS checks will be completed within 24-48 hours; however, there are times when the application can take longer (up to 14 days) to process, such as when internal queries are brought up.
How much is a Basic DBS Check?

What is the difference between a Basic and Standard DBS check?
One of the main differences between a basic and standard check is that anyone can apply for a Basic DBS Check. However, Standard DBS Checks can only be obtained for certain roles or professions, and you are not able to apply for them yourself.
Will I pass a Basic DBS check?
You cannot ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ a DBS Check. A Basic Check will simply highlight any unspent convictions or cautions the application may have against their name.
How far back does a Basic DBS check go?
There is no limit as to how far back a DBS Check can go.
Can an individual obtain a Basic DBS Check on their own?
Yes, any individual over the age of sixteen years is allowed to request their own basic check.
Why would I need a Basic DBS Check?
More often than not, you’ll require a Basic DBS Check when applying for a job in the UK. However, some professions will require you to obtain a Standard or Enhanced DBS check. Alternatively, you may also need to apply for a Basic DBS Check when applying for a personal alcohol licence or visa.
How long does a DBS Check last?
DBS certificates technically don’t expire. However, the DBS recommends that you renew your DBS Check every three years. Employers will likely have their own set of criteria regarding DBS Checks and how old they can be.
