DBS Check For Personal Licence
If you are hosting events or intend to run a pub or restaurant, you will need to apply for a personal licence to sell alcohol. The UK has strict laws against selling alcohol without a license, and you could quickly find yourself in trouble without one.
Fortunately, only one person needs to go through this process. That person will then be responsible for any alcohol sold on the premises. Part of this process involves taking a course (which can be done online) and completing a basic DBS check. This check will be required when submitting your licence application.

Basic DBS For Personal Licence Check
To obtain a personal licence, you will need to request a basic DBS check, which is the simplest form of a DBS check and will highlight any unspent convictions, as well as confirm your identity. It is important to note that a criminal record will not prevent you from receiving your licence. Your specific convictions will be taken into consideration regarding your ability to handle alcohol responsibly.
During the application process, you will be required to declare any ‘relevant offences’ you have been convicted of. Once you have made your declaration, the licensing authority will share your application with a Chief Police Officer who will review this information and ultimately make a decision.

What Situations Require An Alcohol Licence?
There are a number of types of alcohol licences and the type you request will depend on the nature of the event or premises that you are requesting for. Regardless of the type of licence you apply for, you will still be subject to a basic DBS check.
Here are the different types of circumstances in which you may require a personal licence check:
Single Events
Occasional licences are required for anyone intending to serve alcohol at a single event. This personal license application will include informing your local council of the event and agreeing to end the event and have everything cleaned up by a specific time. These licenses are for only one event, and if you plan to run more, you will require a different alcohol licence altogether.
Pubs & Restaurants
If you are planning on running a pub or restaurant, you will need to apply for two alcohol licences. These include a premises licence in which you will have to state the building in which you will be selling the alcohol, as well as a personal licence.
Outlets Selling Alcohol
If you are intending to sell alcohol from an outlet, you will need to obtain the same two licences as you would for a pub or restaurant: a premises licence and a personal licence.

Frequently Asked Questions About DBS Checks For A Personal Licence
Do you want to know more about basic DBS checks for selling alcohol? Here are the most frequently asked questions that we get about personal licence DBS checks:
Why Choose DBS Checks Online For Your Personal Licence Check?
When applying for a personal license DBS check, you will, of course, not want delays. DBS Checks Online is one of the leading Disclosure and Barring Service checkers, and will ensure that your check is completed in the soonest possible time frame. Our easy-to-use online system makes the application simple, and you can track and receive your certification right from the platform.
Can You Get A Personal Licence If You Have A Criminal Record?
As previously mentioned, having a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from getting a personal licence. However, if your criminal record shows that you have a ‘relevant offence’, which includes serious crime or dishonesty, certain sexual offences, controlled drugs and offences created by the Act, this could potentially impact whether your application is approved. Once you have declared your relevant offences and proven these with a basic DBS check, your application will be passed to a Chief Police Officer, who will investigate and decide.
Can I Get A DBS Check For Myself?
Yes, you can apply for a Basic DBS check yourself, which is the level of check required as part of the personal licence application process. There are other DBS checks that you cannot request yourself, however, these are not required for this particular application.
How Long Is A Personal Licence Certificate Valid For?
There is no expiry date on a personal licence, so you may retain your licence for as long as you wish. However, keep in mind that if you apply for a personal licence for a single event, it is valid for only that event.
Can Your Personal Licence Be Revoked?
Your personal licence will not have an expiry date, but that does not mean it cannot be revoked. Your licence can be taken away if you are found guilty of a relevant offence after the licence was approved.
