What is an
Enhanced DBS Check?
An Enhanced DBS Check is the highest criminal background check available. This check is also commonly referred to as an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service Check.Â
There are two forms of this check available, an Enhanced with Barring List and an Enhanced without Barring List. The former check will not only uncover spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings against an individual’s name, but it will also check whether that individual’s name is listed on the Children’s Barred List or Adult First List.
Who is eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check?
Enhanced DBS Checks are generally reserved for professions and roles where an individual will be working with vulnerable individuals, such as children, the elderly or vulnerable adults. These roles are stipulated within the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.Â
Additionally, individuals who find themselves working in a registered care home, high-security psychiatric hospital, or a school or nursery for more than one day a week or three days in a month, will also need to undergo an enhanced check.Â
As with the Standard DBS Check, individuals cannot request to complete Enhanced DBS Check themselves. This is due to the protected nature of criminal information in the UK and ensures that only those who are eligible are able to access this data.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
ENHANCED DISCLOSURE CHECK FAQS
What does an Enhanced DBS Check show?
An Enhanced DBS Check highlights all the information that comes up on a Standard Check. However, it will also indicate whether an individual is listed on the Children’s Barred List or Adult First List, should an employer request this information.
How do I apply for an Enhanced DBS Check for myself?
As an individual, you cannot apply for an Enhanced DBS Check yourself. An application for both this and a standard check must be completed by an organisation or company.
How much is an Enhanced DBS Check UK?
We offer Enhanced DBS Checks starting at £46. However, we also offer bulk order options too.
What is the difference between a Standard DBS Check and an Enhanced DBS check?
A Standard DBS Check highlights these issues found within a Basic DBS Check as well as unspent convictions. It cannot be obtained individually but rather through an employer or organisation. An Enhanced DBS Check is the highest criminal background check and will show all the information seen on a Standard DBS Check. However, an employer can also request to see whether an individual is listed on the Children’s Barred List or Adult First List.
How far back does an Enhanced DBS Check go?
For both Enhanced and Standard DBS Checks, there is no limit as to how far back the check will go
What is a regulated activity?
Regulated activities refer to certain roles that involve work with vulnerable adults or children where you would not be supervised. Examples include training, teaching, instructing, guiding and driving. These are activities that individuals named on the Barred List cannot do.
Must you get an Enhanced DBS Check even if you don’t do a regulated activity?
Yes, there are some situations where even if your work isn’t classified as a regulated activity, you may still be required to obtain an Enhanced DBS Check. For example, if you find yourself working with vulnerable adults (like in a care home), you will likely need to obtain an Enhanced Check without a check against the ISA Barred List. However, should you find yourself working with with or around children, you will be eligible for an Enhanced DBS Check and a check with children’s barring list/List 99.
How long does a DBS Check last?
DBS certificates technically don’t expire. However, the DBS recommends that you renew your DBS Check every three years. Employers will likely have their own set of criteria regarding DBS Checks and how old they can be.
